Meeting-minutes is a common practice by European companies. It normally includes every tiny detail, esp. who says what during the meeting. Recently, a Swiss client complains to me about their Chinese shareholder, who refuses to include the details and accepts only to put the general points in the meeting-minutes.
“What shall we do, Xuefei? Already one month since the meeting was held, we are still discussing what to put inside the meeting-minutes …”
Contrary to European analytical approach where every detail counts in the making of a conclusion, Chinese approach is more pragmatic and holistic where the details don’t weigh much and only the final result counts. What’s more, culturally, many Chinese feel uncomfortable to see their talks recorded in a written report, considered as a possible trace which could compromise themselves later (to be held responsible).
