WHY DO CHINESE PEOPLE GIVE THEMSELVES WESTERN NAMES ?


I get constantly questioned by Europeans why Chinese people give themselves Western names: “Xuefei, my Chinese colleague asks us to call him ‘Beyond’. Another day, I met a young man called Shrek …”

“To facilitate communication with foreigners. It’s also a fashion: international, trendy and fun.” I replied. “But Xuefei, why don’t you have a Western name?”

Simply because Xuefei is my real name. It reminds me of my roots and home. It is heartwarming. It’s also for me a wonderful ice-breaking topic here in Europe. People always ask me politely if they pronounce my name correctly, where I come from and what is the meaning associated with Xuefei ?
