In Chinese hospitals, the lack of patient privacy may shock many Europeans. During a consultation, other patients wait in the same room and watch the doctor examining you. From time to time, new patients burst into the room to talk to the doctor. Nobody feels bothered, neither the patients nor the doctor.
Chinese perception of privacy differs wildly from Europe. Europeans place considerable emphasis on privacy because they value individualism. China is more group-oriented. “Privacy” has a negative connotation, which means isolating from group and implies secrecy.
